Raven Tale

Raven tales are traditional creation stories of many different tribes of first nation peoples. Raven is a mystical creature, a keeper of secrets, and a trickster. There are many versions of the stories about raven stealing the moon, stars, and sun.

Here is one of those stories.

“Raven Tale”

In the beginning, the world was dark. Raven, who has existed since the beginning of time, grew tired of the darkness. One day, he learned of an old man and his daughter, who had a treasure hidden in a box. People said sometimes the man would peek in the box and warm light would come out. Raven decided he simply MUST have this treasure. Raven transformed himself into a pine needle and dropped himself into a river. When daughter came to the river to fill her water basket, the pine needle was scooped up in the water. The daughter took a cool drink of the water and swallowed the needle. Now the raven transformed himself again. This time, he became a teensy tiny human baby in the daughter's belly. After a time, the baby was born. Old man, now a grandfather, loved his new grandson, though grandson was rather funny looking. His skin was unusually dark, and his black hair resembled feathers. Grandfather gave him most everything, but told him he must never ever touch the box. Grandson begged and begged grandfather to show him what was in the box. Eventually grandson wore grandfather down. You know how grandchildren are. They are so cute and innocent. Grandfather opened the box and let his grandson peek inside. There was a beautiful glowing sphere in the box. Oh grandfather, the boy cried, can I please hold it? Grandfather gently tossed the sphere to his grandson. As soon as grandson had the sphere, he transformed into a huge raven. He took the beautiful glowing orb into his beak and flew away into the sky. This is how light came to the universe.

The sculpture portrays raven in an old robe. The robe is old and worn. As old as raven, symbols of the sun and moon, the 4 directions, and the sacred colors of the directions are on the robe. Raven holds a golden orb. Is it the sun or the moon? It is for you to decide.
